Dining

We're fortunate to have one of the best fine dining restaurants in East Tennessee -- The Foothills Milling Company -- right here in Maryville.

We went for dinner last night. It was our third visit (we really need to get over there more!) and it is as good or better than before.

We barely knew you.

Open less than 8 months.

For me and many others, the site is a great location. Nice deck in the back, convenient to the Greenway, three hotels, two banks, City of Alcoa administration offices, Blount Memorial Wellness Center, a realtor and more within walking distance.

I look forward to a new restaurant in that spot.

Closure notice and pic after the jump.

Looking for a drive-in more authentic than Sonic and a burger better than Five Guys and ice cream better than Marble Slab with prices none of those other places can beat?

Check out Amburn's Hum-Dinger Drive-in at 1540 East Broadway Ave. in Maryville (near the Five Points Roundabout).

An institution since 1957, Hum-Dinger has probably the best burgers and shakes you will find in Blount Co. The onion rings are proper, too, with a light batter and actual rings of onion (unlike those frozen, chopped onion fakes they serve at some places). Best chocolate malt I've had in a while, too. Highly recommended, but not on a regular basis if you are watching your cholesterol.

Lemongrass (across 321 from Target) is a real gem. It's a nice little white tablecloth place, so it is good for a date, but not too fancy a place to go with children if that's more the stage you're at. They serve "good" Thai food (it may not be the most authentic on the planet, but it IS good) and I enjoy their sushi. They don't have much turnover with their wait staff, so they remember each member of the family, inquire about the ones who are missing, and already know what you're going to order when you walk in there. The staff are very friendly and put everyone at ease.

I don't know if they will ever do it again, because they had an unbelievable crowd, but tonight was Wednesday $2 Sushi night at Lemongrass. They had 3 sushi chefs, so they ticked through the orders in an amazingly efficient fashion. Apparently, it is available for take-out as well.

If anything, I would love to see this restaurant double in size, with about quadruple the parking spaces available.

Coming soon to the old Atlanta Bread location in Alcoa, near Hall Road on Associates Blvd. Saw a sign, nothing else to report.

Hope it's a good replacement. Many of us have really been missing Atlanta Bread.

We visted Hana some time ago and I'm just getting around to posting it. We were very pleased at our "find".

The sushi was terrific, as were the other dishes we ordered. They were attractive and generous portions. Very cleverly put together. Nice drink selections, too.

It is among the 3 or 4 smaller restaurant buildings across the street from the library. I don't know anything about the management, but thought they must have gotten a professional decorator. It is done in minimalist, modern, Asian style that matched the building perfectly. I would never have dreamed that a restaurant there could be so nice.

Very nice "date restaurant." You'll enjoy it even if you don't like sushi.

Tostones, the new Cuban restaurant at Midland Plaza, is having its soft opening. They are open for lunch and for dinner from 5PM to 9PM.

We stopped by for lunch and had a Cuban sandwich with yucca frita (substituted for fries). It was excellent. The decor is very nice and tastefully decorated -- white tablecloths, cloth napkins. The service was great.

The grand opening will be in a couple of weeks. Looks to be a winner.

We finally made it over to the new Tomato Head in Downtown Maryville yesterday afternoon. I'm glad we did and my only regret is that we waited so long to check it out.

This is Tomato Head's second location. The original is on the Market Square in Downtown Knoxville, and is a favorite on the local hipster scene.
