The construction of the new Publix in Blount County is finishing up. We are told they will be opening October 10, 2023.

We look forward to Publix opening. Hopefully they'll be beneficial to the Foothills Mall staying open.

As reported in The Daily Times, Maryville, TN, Weigel's has requested a site plan approval for the development of a convenience store at the corner of Hunters Crossing Drive and Middlesettlements Road.

This would be nice. We've been hoping for a Weigel's near Alcoa for some time. There had been one planned several years ago on Alcoa Highway near the motor mile. Still nothing there. Maybe it will happen this time.

June 13, 2014, 11:54 PM, it was reported that five cars were damaged by skateboards. At least one of the cars was parked outside Sears.

June 21, 2014, 3:54 PM, a woman reported the windshield of her car was broken. Evidence shows damage was caused by a skateboard. The car was parked outside JC Penney.

July 2, 2014, 10:11 PM, a woman reported the windshield of her car was damaged. It appears the damage was from a skateboard. Another car nearby had the "windshield smashed out."

That's at least eight cars reportedly damaged by skateboarders at Foothills Mall. It would appear it is time for the police and mall officials to take action. Electronic surveillance?

Five years after Kinsey Probasco Hayes, the commercial developer for the Alcoa West Plant project, announced plans to redevelop the site, there is very little to show for their efforts. Since TDOT has not approved, and may not approve, a new interchange to the site, it is possible development will take longer, if at all.

Is it possible the project will take so long that retail centers will no longer be practical? Maybe they should focus more on the town center, New Urbanist portion of the project?

According to one article, retail centers are dying a slow death. One retail analyst, "has forecast that 10 percent of the roughly 1,000 large malls in the U.S. will fail within the next 10 years and be converted into something with far less retail." The president/CEO of a large retail property management company says, ""I don’t think we’re overbuilt, I think we’re under-demolished."

Another article discusses how shopping centers are having to evolve, re-purpose. Consumers are purchasing more on-line, but will still buy groceries and services (medical, gym, restaurants, movies) locally.

An article in the Wall St. Journal suggests that Foothills Mall is in the category of malls that generate "sales per square foot of $250 or less".

According to a study of publicly owned malls, Foothills Mall is one of 84 malls that fall into the category of "dead malls". According to their numbers, three other malls in Tennessee fall into that category: College Square in Morristown, Hickory Hollow Mall in Nashville, and Raleigh Springs in Memphis.

I don't know if I agree with the WSJ's assessment. Foothills Mall has been very low key for years. I cannot imagine Blount County not having a Sears or JC Penney. I could be wrong.

On my way to the Blount County Farmers' Market, I drove by Washington and High Street to see if the previously announced "indoor Farmers' Market" was open.

Much to my delight, The Market is open. I spoke with Dan Mizell, the originator of the concept. He said the store had been open three days. There was quite a bit of activity. Patrons were plentiful.

The Market is open six days a week. The Market is closed today. Definitely give them a try. It's a great opportunity to support local businesses.

So goes the nation, so goes Blount County. In my travels today, I recorded gas prices at a few local stations. Prices ranged from $4.49 to $4.69. The higher prices were at a Shell station, which I believe are typically higher, and a smaller store where I would guess they don't have the supply-chain the larger stores have.

Friday, before the hurricane, I purchased a full tank of gas at one of these stores for $3.59/gal. What a difference a day makes.

At the end of the day I passed by one of the stores and the price had not changed.

Speaking of the sales tax holiday this weekend, the new Circuit City in Alcoa is set to open Saturday.

Some merchandise is eligible for the sales tax exemption (specifically computers costing less than $1500), so it's a chance to save a few bucks.

The stores at the new Hamilton Crossing Plaza will help offset Alcoa's estimated $450,000 loss of sales tax revenues to the new Super Wal*Mart out on 411 S.

The liquor stores that should be opening soon will help, too.
