Blount County Maryville Alcoa Parks and Rec put on another great free concert last night for their Songs by the Brook series at Springbrook Park in Alcoa.
Singer-songwriter Jay Clark and The Tennessee Tree Beavers opened the show with some fine picking, singing and story telling with an environmentally conscious "beer drinking gospel" flavor.
Headliner Laurel Wright had to cancel at the last minute, but Parks & Rec pulled off a major surprise getting East Tennessee's beloved singer-songwriter and award winning recording artist Robinella to perform. Her opening jazzy interpretation of Somewhere Over the Rainbow got everyone's attention right quick. Some folks around us (apparently not from around here) were like "Who's that girl? She's amazing!" Indeed, she is.
Turnout for the second concert in the series was great once again, and the weather cooperated with beautiful clear blue skies. Despite the 90 degree heat, Springbrook Park is always a few degrees cooler, and the shade and a cool breeze made for a comfortable setting.
The series concludes next month with Pistol Creek Catch of the Day and The Bus Driver Tour featuring Ian Thomas, Thursday, Sept. 25th, 5:30 PM at Springbrook Park. Y'all come on out.
Parks & Rec have done an outstanding job with this series, and we hope it's back next year.

I was holding my breath while
I was holding my breath while Robinella sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It was beautiful.
I loved the references to CAPPE and South Knoxville by Jay Clark. He is not originally from South of the River/Blount County but he certainly has picked up on the nuances. Loved it.
Thanks again to Blount County Parks & Rec along with ALCOA, Alcoa TN FCU, etc.
Jay is a good friend...Actually, they all are!

Blount County is blessed to see this quality of music for free! Jay Clark is one of the best singer/songwriters walking the planet. I hope you got one or two of his CD's. He plays our music series every time we can work him in. And he's not just a musician. I've had people tell me that if he forgets his guitar they'll still pay to hear him talk about his day. He's one of the funnier humans alive.
Bass Player Daniel Kimbro is back for a few minutes to hug his children and kiss his wife. He's actually on tour with Jerry Douglas, the world's most awesome dobro musician...the guy who discovered Alison Krauss and plays in her shows. Daniel is the force behind Mountain Soul, a flexible Americana tour de force. The CD is one of the best in my collection.
Greg Horne plays as everybody's guitar player. Solid as it gets. Get his CD and listen to Metamora and Siberian Express. You can thank me later.
Support your local music, Blount County! You are totally covered up with awesome talent.
