Sorry we couldn't make the
Sorry we couldn't make the meeting as we had hoped.
So, looking forward to the a report from somebody...
Here's what happened
The Ethics Committee took no action on the controversy around Mike Lewis, Wendy Pitts Reeves, or Bob Proffitt because no actual complaints had been filed. Personally, I'm not sure that the absence of a formal form should mean no action should be taken, especially when the Mayor has made a point of filing HIS complaint with Blount Today.
Important Note: Apparently, any citizen can file a complaint by getting a form from the HR Director (Betsy Cunningham) and returning it to her in person. According to the report by WBIR News, who was at the meeting, several citizens in the audience promised to be at the courthouse tomorrow morning filing complaints.
What are we doing?
Just as a point of clarification; Is our County Commission set up to be deliberative or just there to set policy based on the findings of sub-committees? I watch the British House of Commons, where you can actually see debate - from the top down, and it makes me sad that many here have decided they can't speak for themselves.
If all the decisions are made at the sub level, pull the County Commission cameras for use in sub meetings. That way the general public that doesn't show up, can at least see how some of the obtuse rules we have to live by are made.
As some of the committee's and appointments are made by the mayor (who has been caught in at least one public lie (link...)) are we really utilizing democracy or just some watered down sub-version of it?
Has anyone heard?
Has anyone heard whether any ethics complaints have been filed with the HR Dept. since Monday's meeting?
